Because of the sheer volumes of money involved. A lot of these churches command sizable donation pools, as well as manpower provided through volunteer and collaboration efforts. A schism like this weakens the orthodox branch and the reformist branch alike.

That’s true, but how big is the reformist branch on the point of female pastors? I’d have to imagine it’s tiny. I don’t think there was much discussion here.

Saddleback Church claims a membership of over 350k parishioners across 29 branches.

This is the church that’s being denied reentry over its women in leadership.

Out of 13.2 million members and 47,198 churches in the SBC. I don’t have hard numbers on other churches that support this, but this church, even as big as it is, is still tiny compared to the entire denomination.

Oh, we’re selectively quoting bible verses that suit us?
      How about this then:

      Mark.10 Verse 21
[21] Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

Yeah exactly, this is on brand for their beliefs. Still dumb as hell, but they’re being consistent at least. Not sure why this is news tbh, this is a normal Wednesday for this group of people.

Primarily, thought not exclusively, becuase of these verses:

      1 Timothy 3:2-7:

Therefore an overseer[a] must be above reproach, the husband of one wife,[b] sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

ty, you’re probably right. i hope some of those women can get out. what a waste of your time and your life to always feel like you’re beneath your husband. not to mention how women in those christian sects get wrangled into marriage sometimes with a dude who is 110% okay with being domestically violent :'D

Because if you let women have authority, people might start believing things like “men are not automatically good without needing to actually do good things” and “authority isn’t instantly derived from the circumstances of your birth but instead based on your merits as a leader”.
