It can be fairly common in blue collar work too. Pretty much anything that’s skill over knowledge. Though programming is that one profession that rides the line between the two “worlds”

23·13 days agoUhh, how much do you think blue collar folk make? A lot of them could pay that off in a year if they have no other obligations, 5 year loan would be no problem. And more to the point, why does this feel like you’re denigrating blue collar work by insinuating they get paid shit?

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Pretty much every day someone parks their car on the tram tracks and blocks our city's tram network from operatingEnglish
5·13 days agowhat Americans call manslaughter
Yes and no. We use homicide too, but homicide just means one person was killed by another person. That’s used more in medical situations or law enforcement reports. Manslaughter is a legal term and comes in when the state/courts are doing the whole charging part. Then there’s the whole manslaughter vs murder that trips people up too since those are both legal terms. I believe the main difference between them is intent.

10·13 days agoIt doesn’t have to be physically on the track to impede operation. Better phrasing would’ve been it was in the path of the tram, I suppose.
It can, but it doesn’t mean it will be good or useful at all lol but I get what you’re saying. Government is for people, business is for profit. People and profit are not compatible as the purpose of the entity. Just look at the US Healthcare “Industry” for the most glaring example of this.

Jerboa@lemmy.ml•scrolling up through the comments bounces back on inline images
3·14 days agoI’m not sure if my scrolling issue is due to images or not, but sometimes it won’t let me scroll back up and it’ll like snap back to where I am. And if i scroll down it repeats every comment I just read. Definitely some weirdness with scrolling going on occasionally

Interesting. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard it used outside of like a crime gang in a movie after they finish a job - “here’s your cut (of the overall package)”, etc.
I’d be kinda pissed if they only gave me a cut (partial) of my pay. Language is fun and English sucks lol
