  • It’s important to note how we got here. In old English man just meant human. Wereman meant male and wifman meant female. Over time that “were” prefix got dropped and man now means male but the ambiguous meaning of humankind stuck around. In fact “human” comes from old french “of man”, again the non-gendered use of the word man.

The point is to fix all these problems we just have to bring back the “were”. The progressive werewolves are way ahead of us on this issue.

  • It still too soon to tell honestly. The major bump of this policy is a one time surge of all the built up password-sharers but it’s likely not going to be huge swing to their growth long term.

And then these new subscribers, are they going to stick around? A common scenario might be someone cutoff midway through a series just subscribing for a couple months to finish them off.

And for the same reason I would expect new subs from the policy would happen quickly while unsubs might be delayed. The main account holders would likely finish off their series and take time deciding on their new streaming service before outright cancelling.

And all of this just ruffles feathers and makes the service a bit less valuable right when real competition is heating up.

  • The crimes aren’t quite the same though. As far as I’m aware Trump is charged with mishandling/retaining classified documents and then a slew of charges from trying to obstruct and cover up. He’s not charged with transmitting (leaking/selling) the information. And being a former president really does muddy the waters - because usually the espionage act isn’t trying someone that once held broad authority to declassify information.

The bail system and the law in general are favorable to the wealthy and affluent but these two cases aren’t apples to apples.

A lot of people assume the US is just giving money mostly like cash too when a majority is really military equipment/training. It’s kind of a win for the US because it supports their political goals in the region, gives them a chance to test weapon systems in real conditions, replace these weapons with more modern and advanced versions for the US military, and the money “paid” for these systems also mostly stays in the US economy anyway.

  • That’s not really how 👀 is used these days among the young folk, but I wouldn’t expect a random Canadian farmer to know that either.

I don’t think that a thumbs up emoji should be a valid signature. The farmer was responding to “please confirm flax contract” and the thumbs up emoji really could mean “I’ve seen your text and will look at the contract to confirm/deny soon.” Although the article did also mention that the same type of acceptance had happened previously with this farmer where the contracts were treated as valid and fulfilled so the farmer is probably disingenuous with their argument.

  • That’s my biggest fear too. And even with archiving if you spend all that time growing a community and the instance just dies then you have to rebuild the community from scratch on a different server. It seems oddly risky because without secured funding who knows which instances might die and when.

I think long term there might need to be some form of revenue from the site just to ensure needs are met and incentivize devs/admins to stick with it. But maybe the donations will surprise me and things will go smooth like wikipedia.
