World Politics@lemmy.world•Populist parties choose divisive issues on purpose, researchers say
1·9 days ago“Everyone should be able to make their voice heard in truly democratic processes.” - good populism
“We should form an angry mob and go burn the houses of [minority group].” - bad populism
“To hell with the doctors, this old folk remedy totally cures [communicable disease].” - also bad populism
Populism is always going to be a force in politics imo, trying to stop it just leads to more bad populism than good populism

World Politics@lemmy.world•Populist parties choose divisive issues on purpose, researchers say
2·9 days agoI bet the actual research has some interesting things to say, but this article feels like it’s vague on purpose so it can get positive reactions from both the people who define “populist” and “divisive” as “fascists” and “bigoted nonsense” and the people who define those things as “anyone who complains about wealth inequality” and “talking about global climate change or Israeli genocides”
That for profit company would appreciate people doing their advertising work for them for free I’m sure
Has it actually been reported anywhere that the sandwich in question came from this restaurant chain?

News@lemmy.world•Judge orders ICE to improve Chicago ‘prison’ after ‘disturbing’ details from inside
31·10 days agoJudge Gettleman has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement to provide three meals a day, adequate supplies of water, access to prescription medicine, clean bedding and space to sleep for any detainee held there overnight, with “adequate supplies of soap, towels, toilet paper, oral hygiene products (including toothbrushes and toothpaste) and menstrual products for women detainees.”
Holding cells and toilets are to be cleaned, and detainees should have access to showers “at least every other day,” according to the order.
If you have to order the waiter to bring you a soup the chef didn’t spit in you should probably just skip ahead to finding a different place to eat

1·10 days agoFor the government’s books, sure (if anything, it was a 0% interest loan, which is probably better than a wash strictly speaking)
But for society in general - the money was gathered from consumers but will be getting returned to businesses, so not a wash at all

News@lemmy.world•Jury selected for the trial of D.C.'s 'sandwich guy' - Sean Dunn went viral over the summer for throwing a salami sub at a Customs and Border Protection agent.
2·12 days agoYou’re remembering correctly, but grand jury indictments are only required for felony charges not misdemeanors. Way less serious charge than they were trying for originally, but if he’s unlucky enough to get 12 scumbags on his jury he could still end up being fined or doing a few months in jail.

NYT really thinks its readers are this stupid
In this tech-savvy age, when many get their questions answered online by swiping a phone or clicking a mouse, the consulate sessions are a throwback to another era, when problems were addressed face to face.

News@lemmy.world•More than 100 judges have ruled against the Trump admin’s mandatory detention policy
213·13 days agoAnd what’s the point of that? NOTHING has changed,
Not true, hundreds of individual people have been released orat leats had their deportations paused
The onslaught of legal rejections has come in hundreds of individual cases, typically filed on an emergency basis after ICE’s targets are arrested at courthouses or check-ins with immigration officers. Though a handful of class action lawsuits have been filed seeking to block the administration’s expanded detention policy, they have advanced slowly and seem weeks — perhaps months — from resolution.
Lots of terrible things are being done and any kind of justice is happening unacceptly slowly and arbitrarily, but saying “NOTHING” is happening isn’t true and makes things seem more hopeless than they are

Potential penalties for violations include both administrative and criminal sanctions such as suspension or removal from duty, fines and imprisonment
I mean, this is the sound of a journalist screaming internally “SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING”, but the time to start screaming externally was a while ago

News@lemmy.world•Amazon strategised about keeping its datacentres’ full water use secret, leaked document shows
15·22 days ago“Oh wow, our research shows our business model destroys the planet, better keep that a secret!” is the sort of exemplary moral reasoning I normally only expect from petroleum companies
In addition to that reference, I bet this is a pandemic era joke about public health guidance
I think there’s also a bit of rationality behind that system, because
a) Trolls will just lie and declare an article says something it doesn’t to “win” an argument or waste people’s time making them read their bullshit article (usually something hosted on a website you don’t want to give traffic to)
b) Some people on those forums might have tightly constrained time-frames for looking at things because they’re students or they’re working in a restaurant or retail shop or some other kind of closely managed service job where they can get yelled at by a supervisor for using their phone
c) There’s a lot of content to get to on the internet
So, I think it’s kind of a dick move to get mad at other people for not reading the article, and it’s definitely a dick move to do that if you don’t take the time to quote the specific part of the article they’re claiming contradicts someone else
