Trinity stood out the most to me, it seems to have less unnecessary fluff
Ok I tried it out and as of now Jan has a better UI/UX imo (easier to install and use), but Open WebUI seems to have more features like document/image processing.
Thanks for pointing that out—looks like they’re working on a Server Suite. I’d guess that they try to monetize that but leave the personal desktop version free
Does this differ from Ollama + Open WebUI in any way?
Welcome! 🎉
From what I’ve seen It’s mostly been:
I think that content all depends on how many users and apps there are—not much you can do about that.
Maybe we could have a monthly post asking people what they want in Lemmy apps (features, ideas, likes and dislikes)? That might be a good way to bring all devs and users together to think of ways to make the ecosystem better
Of course! Yeah, this post was intended to be less of a proposal and more of a brainstorm session. Maybe licenses aren’t the way to go about this, or we create our own licenses to be compatible with ActivityPub and match Lemmy’s values? Maybe it doesn’t matter how our content is used, or there’s nothing we can do?
You might be right, I definitely see your point. ActivityPub adds a whole new layer to this too. In the end though, isn’t the content we post no different than anything else published on the Internet? I guess it’s important to note that technically nothing public can be 100% prevented from being used in unwanted ways. However, there might be other ways (legally, socially, etc.) we could discourage it.
Regardless, I’d love to get a better sense of how much this matters to us here on Lemmy—or if it should even matter in the first place
I think you can see total donations at the bottom of join-lemmy.org
Thanks for hearing us and continuing to allow all types of apps here. FOSS is an amazing model for some projects, but some of us simply want to protect the rights of what we create or we’re looking at other models to help Lemmy become more sustainable
Might have spoken too soon, sorry. I saw you were banned on awful.systems but looks like the ban was an accident (modlog).
You don’t have to do any of that, I was just pointing out that none of us really know who you are, where you came from, or how you became a mod here. That makes the decisions you’re making for this community more difficult to receive.
If another poll (through StrawPoll or something else more fair) is the only option you’ll consider, I vote for that. I still think a separate community for FOSS Lemmy apps would be best given the results so far, but it’s ultimately up to you
Oh, spoke too soon maybe, looks like it might have been accidental https://awful.systems/modlog?page=1&userId=3525901
I’ll remove that from my comment
I still disagree with how this was executed:
I’m putting further pressure on this because:
Here are some alternative solutions we could discuss:
Regardless, please take the time needed to do this fairly and consider both sides. Changing the topic of a 5k-member community based on a 50/50 or even 60/40 vote should not be taken lightly.
That’s too bad, some of us simply want to retain ownership of what we create or are looking for a more sustainable model. I definitely see and respect the good intentions here though.
Also, in the interest of transparency, would you mind un-deleting the poll post and discussion post so others can see the discussions if they wish?
Thanks for asking the community about this. Here’s my two cents:
The problem with restricting this community to FOSS is that you’re also choking out people/organizations that simply want to retain ownership of what they create or seek long-term sustainability. Retaining ownership of something or charging for something doesn’t automatically mean malicious intent. Both FOSS and proprietary have their place, and each one can be more sustainable than the other depending on the project and the maintainers. We should definitely be against people and companies that are exploiting user privacy, but we shouldn’t be banning everyone that simply wish to retain ownership of what they create as well.
Awesome, thanks for doing this!
