It’s a pretty apt metaphor. One minor quibble, gamers don’t think games are real. Sure, it’s no less important to them maybe just because it isn’t real, but they do not, in fact, think it’s real. Also if you don’t want to play their game, they won’t sack you or throw you in prison or kill you.
Doesn’t seem like they are nerdy about it. More like watched the movie that was based on the game that was based on a book and think they are the real fans.
The worst kind of nerd, the poser.

Nah most of them don’t show up in the pews
So like most of my friends with 40k. Too much work to read all the media. But based on a YouTube essay and a quick Wikipedia read they think they are experts and will proclaim their firmly held beliefs on it.
Listen. I know a lot about the Golden Emperor of Humans, and his angry Butler wars.
…and they SUPER freak out if you say their favorite game isn’t the best one.
That seems to be a human trait. Just ask anyone about their political views, which mobile phone they have, sports teams, climate change, vaccinations, dietary preferences, gender minorities, sexual minorities, parenting styles, music genres, pineapple on pizza, medieval siege engines etc.
BTW raspberries are better than strawberries.
That’s just the definition of “hobby”. Time + money + obsession = hobby.
My hobby is buying steam games and browsing the steam store or my already owned collection. Not actually playing the games though. That would be weird
Have you tried browsing DLCs? It’s great. Some games even have tons of them and there’s bundles of them, and different lists and everything.
Working for those extra lives and using cheat codes when ever possible.

The religious will virtue signal whatever from religion is convenient to them at a given time but are rarely curious or nerdy about the actual substance of it. Gamers actually need to learn the rules of a game or else they face consequences.
Idk. I dont hear about people killing others who play different consoles than them
Technically speaking, they only kill people that play the very same game, as the killing is done in game.
Idk know. Maybe if they play GTA 5 for another 3000 years we might see.
They’re immersed in fictional worlds that give them a feeling of power and control, sure.
You’ve described having a hobby.
No… Not even a little bit.
i mean … this is backwards.
Gamers are the new fanatical extremists ready to jihad from the announcement of a new game.
Oh yeah I remember when that definitely happened
