60-65% of households in the USA are homeowners, either outright or through a mortgage. 80-90% of households in Eastern Europe are homeowners. It’s pretty clear that people who are perennial renters are mostly people who cannot clear the financial hurdle of a down payment. I don’t think the “some people don’t want to” line is a solid argument. It’s the exception thata proves the rule.

The repairs and property taxes and mortgage all add up to a total that is less than the rent, on average. Otherwise, landlords would have a disincentive, and every landlord would be operating at a loss.

When someone offers you two poor options, the right thing to do is to create a better option, even if you take the less bad option in the short run. Voting a Democrat into office and then congratulating ourselves on doing it is how progress slips and how we lose sight of what’s needed.

Most of us favor an immediate armistice along the present LOC that follows pretty closely a “dividing line” for the plurality ethnicity as evidenced by the past 30 years of linguistic, electoral, and poling data. And we favor quick peace as opposed to continued hostility that likely will go nowhere.

It sucks that Ukraine’s self-determination is being jeopardized by Russia. It sucks that Luhansk’s self-determination is being jeopardized by Ukraine. It sucks that there’s a geopolitical standoff between the two strongest military powers that overlays this. It sucks that the only imaginable ruling party in Russia is a reactionary capitalist one that was ushered in by Clinton’s intervention. And it sucks that they’re all probably just going to die in a field to resolve it, and make the situation in Bosnia look like a vacation resort in comparison.

There is a silver lining in that we are seeing a great power struggle to subjugate its neighbor, and also in that the wearing down of NATO and Russia allows the less belligerent, more progressive, emerging superpower to have more sway in the world. Some might say that makes it “worth it” but I certainly don’t.

As an anarchist-communist, to me they’re pretty darn close.

It may be hard to fathom for someone who’s so used to Reddit, but Hexbear users really do have a deep love for each other. Also we are really really ridiculously online.

This is kind of analogous to the “CCP is falsifying all of its own data” allegation. You can cling to some sort of dogmatic narrative like Hexbear inflating its stats à la r/the_donald, that’s exceedingly difficult to prove or draw anything conclusive from, or you can take a close look at it and see the reality that lines up with the stats.

What if we based our concerns off statistically significant realities? 🤔

• The prevailing morality is to follow an arbitrary set of rules, mostly made by and for a class of people who have dominated the political sphere for most of human history. E.g. “If this will violate Ownership™ of a thing as defined by law, you shouldn’t do it.”

• Another kind of morality is to consider the effects of an action. E.g. “If this makes someone’s life noticeably harder or more miserable, you shouldn’t do it.”

• Another kind is to look at the social relations. E.g. “If this enriches yourself at the cost of someone who is already worse off than you, you shouldn’t do it.”
