      Eh, I think most of it is probably the lighting. He’s mainly lit from in front in the first picture, which would minimize any shadows on his face and make his skin look smoother. When lit from above by the porch light like the second picture (probably taken later in the evening), it just makes those shadows more apparent.

          Later in the day relative to when the first picture was taken, not later the literal very same day.

        Not at all. It has its challenges but plenty of jobs are harder and much less fulfilling.
