It’s good advice but its a little oversimplified. People mostly aren’t binary and we’ll all be givers and takers at different points in our lives. Again, in broad strokes, still good advice, just don’t let the binary categorization solidify and embitter you.

Totally agree with you adding this nuance. This meme implies people who “take” are bad, but all of us take.

In my experience the world dividing the world into givers and takers is very unhealthy and just not accurate. Most of my close people both need and provide support in varying amounts over time.

Some people lean one way or another. There’s a quote from I, Tonya - something like “in this world there are flowers, and there are gardeners. You don’t know how to garden.”

I lately got to gauge my “market value”, having understood that, in the natural equilibrium of giving and taking, I had definitely been selling myself short.

I decided to cut down on my participation to all kinds of events and initiatives that would have me as an active element and even some in which I perceived to be a passive one, turning out I was often wrong about it.

In some circles, silence will be the outcome, and you can then start to drop in consciously until equilibrium is reestablished. In others, people will surprisingly cry out for your participation, voice, insight or whatever else you brought to the table.

The absolute plus is having a lot of time (and often money follows) freed up, which you can use to invest in yourself, which in turn brings up your value in other’s eyes (I am dieting with the help of a professional right now).
